How Exercise Physiology can help manage chronic pain

Pain is an unpleasant but normal experience that our body produces on a daily basis to protect us and inform our behaviour. However, pain can sometimes become a problem that for some people can last a lifetime.

“Pain is an aversive sensory and emotional experience typically caused by, or resembling that caused by, actual or potential tissue injury”- International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP)

Unfortunately chronic pain is a big problem in Australia. With 1 in 5 people being affected by persistent pain. Lower back pain is also the leading cause of disability in developed countries!

Luckily, at Effect Exercise Physiology we are passionate about helping those with chronic pain move better, feel better and manage their health like they couldn’t before.

How Exercise Physiology can help manage chronic pain

What we currently understand about pain

  • Pain is a protective response that your body and mind contributes to to make you do (or not do) something to protect the painful body part (or parts!)
  • Pain is caused by a complex interaction of biological, psychological and social factors that interact with each other on different levels (we cannot target one and ignore the others)
  • Usually, but not always, pain starts out from a physical injury, but these other social and psychological factors can prolong the pain long after the injury has healed.
  • The longer someone is in pain the more sensitive our body can become. Our body gets “better” at picking up things that could be potentially painful.
  • Certain “threats” to the body can exacerbate your pain. Including but not limited to anxiety, unhappiness, gut inflammation, people and even places
